Getting around

Please feel free to take the maps provided to help you explore, but the beauty of York is to just get lost in all the snickets, alleys and cobbled streets!

There’s a couple of ways to get into the heart of the city…

First route- Take a left and follow the road up, walk besides the city walls to the top of Micklegate (you will see the train station just a few hundred meters in front of you) at the junction take a right on to Micklegate bar.

(Micklegate Bar was the most important of York’s four main medieval gateways and the focus for grand events. The name comes from ‘Micklelith’, meaning great street.)

Walk down the hill and over the bridge (over the river Ouse- the 6th longest river in the U.K.) and you are in the city centre.

Alternatively, there are steps leading up the Micklegate Bar and on to the historic city walls (a circular walk around the perimeter of the old city, these walls date back to the Roman times)

Or if you turn right on to Nunnery Lane you will come to ‘Bishy Road’ Bishopthorpe Road is one of the most famous high streets. It won its title of  ‘high street of the year’ in 2015 and has only got better! It is the perfect high street containing over 50 independent retailers from a wine bars and Michelin recommended restaurant to a fabulous deli and bike repair shop.

From there if you follow the wall around you will come to Skeldergate bridge leading over the river Ouse and beyond that ‘Cliffords Tower’ (from the top of the top you will find panoramic views. It is almost all that remains of York Castle built by William the Conqueror) which is on the very edge of the city and all the shops and attractions it has to offer.

Take a look at: www.visityork.org.uk for local attractions, restaurants and local places of interest

The back door is on a latch so it will lock behind you, if you need to gain access from the garden there is a key box just by the door. The code is ‘2014’ inside the box is the key for the back door, please ensure that you return the key after use.
